Coach Edward Bacason, one of the coaches and physical therapists of the San Miguel Beermen, strongly believes that rehabilitation plays an important role in improving the overall performance of athletes and non-athletes alike. With over 18 years of experience in the fitness industry, he has handled minor cases such as neck and back pains to major injuries like ACL and torn ligaments. His experience in the field has led him to realize one important thing – that rehabilitation is an integral part of any sport and fitness program.

Coach Edward’s career as a physical therapist started when he passed the board exams in 1998. San Miguel’s previous therapist called him and asked him if he wanted to apply as the team’s therapist. His knowledge of basketball and his passion for the sport gave him an edge over the rest of the applicants. Danny Ildefonso, one of San Miguel’s star players back then, also recognized him and told their coaches that they should consider choosing him.

Since then, he’s handled several cases that ranged from back pains to foot, neck, and ACL injuries. Whenever their players get injured, he accompanied them to a doctor and noted their diagnoses and set of protocols. The wide range of injuries that he has handled as well as the time he spent with the doctors gave him extensive experience in the field of rehabilitation.

He can now quickly diagnose any injury as fast as traditional doctors could. His dedication to helping injured players regain their strength has pushed him to learn more about rehabilitation protocols. He read medical journals, attended various seminars, and worked with reputable doctors. He has become an expert in coming up with his own diagnosis and prognosis and making sure that they complement the doctors’ findings.

Today, he formulates his own rehab and strengthening programs and consults doctors about each program to guarantee their effectiveness.

Rehabilitation is crucial not only for players but also their coaches. “As San Miguel’s therapist, I have the obligation to give them a timeframe, a proper prognosis for each player’s recovery. And of course, I have to make sure that I can get them back to playing within the timeframe I’ve set,” Coach Edward said. He does this by giving players a good assessment of their injury and recommending treatment modalities and strengthening exercises that could help them recover as fast as possible without compromising their safety.

According to Coach Edward, sports rehab is important because its goal is not only to heal injuries but also to prevent them and make sure that they won’t recur. He believes that it should be a part of every athletic training program from the very beginning. “If you’re an athlete, you should have an overall assessment of your body even if you’re not experiencing any pain. You should know which muscles are tight, which joints lack range of motion, because they’re all potential sources of injury,” he explained.

When asked if rehabilitation is only for athletes, he said that non-athletes could benefit a lot from it too. “Actually, sports rehab programs can treat all patients with musculoskeletal injuries.

Even if you’re not an athlete, even if you’re an ordinary office person, you should be able to do activities of daily living (ADL) without experiencing any pain. You should also be able to run, jog, jump, and do other activities as well as you did even before you got injured,” he added.

SImS takes pride of their experienced physical therapists and fitness trainers. “If you’re an athlete, we make sure that we coordinate with your team and coaches regarding the activities we’re recommending to make sure that they don’t contradict with what you’re doing during practice. We also make it a point that you have proper knowledge of your injury so that other parts of your body won’t overcompensate for it during training,” he added.

Whether you’re an athlete or not and your experiencing any pain, Coach Edward recommends that you visit Sante Impact System (SImS). Unlike other rehabilitation centers, SImS offers a comprehensive rehab program that does not merely focus on healing certain injuries.
