The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters dominated the court with a 109-92 win against the Alaska Aces in Game 6 of the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. As they bagged their second PBA crown, their victory was indeed a notable one because they managed to win the series with this year’s lowest-scoring import.

Watching from the sidelines, Rain or Shine’s coaching staff gleamed with pride as they reaped the rewards of all their hard work. Among them is Coach Dennis Dizon, a seasoned strength and conditioning coach who has been in the fitness industry for over 25 years. Bearing witness to Rain or Shine’s defeats and victories over the last six years, he was more than willing to share how his team triumphed over an equally strong opponent.

Coach Dennis graduated from San Beda with a degree in Accounting. His family put up a small business and he decided to help his father run it. However, he couldn’t just ignore his passion for sports so he decided to venture into the fitness industry. He became a fitness manager in a prestigious gym while working as the strength and conditioning coach of Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel Beer from 1998 to 2003. He also became part of the coaching staff of the basketball teams of the University of Perpetual Help, La Salle St. Benilde, and Xavier School.

To further his career, he went to Canada and got a certification from the Ontario Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. He also got a certification for speed and agility training from the Hong Kong Sports Institute.

When asked to describe his experience in the field, he said that being a coach has its fair share of challenges. “It’s a continuous learning process. Madami kang mahahandle na players na iba-iba yung character, iba-iba yung mindset so you need to adjust. I see to it that I take into consideration the intensity, frequency, and duration of the workout programs that I design,” he added.

Coach Dennis has been training with the Rain or Shine Elastopainters since 2010. He attributes their team’s recent victory to their guiding principles, specifically their belief that hard work and preparation is the key to winning. “Yung principle na hard work and preparation, first and foremost yan. Dapat walang shortcuts. Hindi mo pwedeng i-shortcut yung ginagawa mo. Dun papasok ang importance ng practice,” he said with conviction.

He also believes that Sante Impact System (SImS) has helped their team win this year’s Commissioner’s Cup. “We started flat. Ang sama nung season pero nakapagchampion pa kami. Of course yung Sante nakatulong sa recovery ng players. Yung training mas convenient din. Si J.R. [Quiñahan] nakuha nya yung desired weight nya kaya ang ganda ng laro nya ngayon,” he recounted with a smile.

His advice to young athletes? “Listen to the coaches. Kahit sinong coach. Listen to them kasi sila yung nag-gaguide sayo e. Hindi pwedeng pupunta ka sa isang team tapos meron kang doubt. Listen to the coaches kasi if you will just do that for the sake of doing it, hindi ka matuto.”

Coach Dennis firmly believes that for fitness centers, the key to getting and retaining more clients is to make their space feel like home. “Kahit nung fitness manager ako, sinasabi ko na you have to care for your clients. You have to make them feel na ito yung bahay nila. Convenience yung first and foremost. You make them feel that it’s their second home,” he said.

This is exactly why he thinks that SImS is a great place for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. He thinks that the environment was carefully designed for athletes. His experience with his co-trainers and SImS’ physical therapists also made him realize that they’re really good at what they’re doing. “Tsaka ang maganda sa Sante they make the place feel like your second home. The athlete feels that, the clients feel that, so hindi sila magdadalawang-isip na bumalik-balik dito,” he said in closing.
